Hi everyone! Remember my promise- to write a book review on Mr. Yuval Noah Harari's book Sapiens: A Brief History Of Humankind? Well... here it is! Overall, it was quite a journey- with many bumpy and uneven roads... along with smooth and even ones.
At first, it was very difficult to read it since I have never read non-fictions like this one. I always tried to get every single detail into my head by all means possible: reading a paragraph over and over again until I got the hang of it, searching for the meaning of every unknown word I find in the dictionary and writing recaps in sticky notes to read later. Instead of making it easier for me to read, these methods made it very difficult and frustrating indeed.
All that went on for about a month- until I could read it just fine- without the help of my incessant efforts of trying to comprehend the paragraphs, the dictionary and the sticky notes. It may be because I got used to the language and the author's style of writing.
As mentioned in the title, this book is only a brief overview of history. History is so vast that a single book won't be enough to describe its all happenings. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT since this brief appeared VAST to me- but it all made sense after I started reading it.
Loads of unbelievable truths about the past and the present as well as mind blowing assumptions about the future are unveiled in this book.
Lots of sarcasm in the midst of serious facts are used which created a comical mood ..at least for me.
It has truly answered so many of my questions about the history of human kind.
I have also learned many facts from this book about various topics- especially the ones which I have never acknowledged (what sapiens think about themselves, consequences of the discovery of fire, etc)
I am sure this book will change the way we look at the world, our ancestors and history.
Whoever is inquisitive about the history of human kind and how we used to live before the basic necessities were invented, this is a must read.
After my smooth experience of reading, the road got bumpy again-there I took a break from Sapiens and read a couple of fiction books, but somehow I got pulled back to Sapiens...after all it is about myself and my historical evolution!!After that the journey was a smooth road of contentment and determination.
The author presents the most complex ideas in simple language.
Currently I am reading Harari's 21 lessons of 21st century- which talks about life skills necessary for the 21st century-which is his third book. Then I will grab Homo Deus, his second book, which talks about the future of sapiens. CAN'T WAIT!!
Warm Regards,
Medha
